Steel structure fabrication involves high volumes of repetitive fillet welds on H-beams, box beams, columns and plate assemblies. Manual welding is consistent but slow, and quality varies with operator fatigue. CBOXTEC robotic welding systems automate these welds with repeatable accuracy, faster travel speeds and lower rework.
Rail-Mounted vs Gantry Systems
For long beams and large plates, rail-mounted robots travel along the workpiece on linear rails. For very large panels—such as ship hull sections or bridge deck units—a gantry robot carries the robot overhead, leaving the factory floor clear for cranes and loading.
Both systems can be equipped with seam tracking, 3D vision and teachless programming to handle part-to-part variation without manual re-teaching.
Key Components of a Structural Steel Welding Cell
A complete cell typically includes:
- Industrial 6-axis welding robot with hollow-arm cable routing
- Welding power source (MIG/MAG, SAW or TIG)
- Seam tracking or 3D vision sensor
- Part positioner or conveyor feeding system
- Custom fixture or clamping system
- Fume extraction and safety guarding
- Offline/teachless programming software
Quality and Certification
CBOXTEC welding systems comply with ISO 9283 robot performance standards, carry CE marking and are built under ISO 9001. We support welding procedure qualification to AWS D1.1, EN 1090, ISO 3834 and other market-specific codes.
Key Features
Teachless Programming
Import CAD or Tekla models and generate weld paths automatically.
3D Vision & Seam Tracking
Compensate for part variation and thermal distortion in real time.
Multi-Pass Control
Automatic multi-pass sequencing for thick-plate fillet and butt welds.
Production-Line Integration
Conveyor feeding, automatic clamping and flux recovery for continuous output.
Case Studies
Bridge Fabricator, Jiangsu Province
A bridge steel fabricator needed to increase throughput for box-girder web and flange welds while reducing rework. CBOXTEC installed two rail-mounted welding robots with 3D seam tracking on a 12-meter rail.
We cut our flange welding time by more than half and first-pass acceptance went from 87% to 98%.
Steel Building Contractor, Thailand
A Thai steel building contractor automated H-beam fillet welding to meet growing demand. CBOXTEC delivered a complete H-beam welding robot workstation with automatic feeding and flux recovery.
One robotic cell replaced three manual stations and freed our best welders for complex assemblies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. CBOXTEC steel structure welding systems are configured to produce welds that meet AWS D1.1, EN 1090 and ISO 3834 quality requirements. Procedure qualification records (PQR/WPS) can be provided.
Most fabricators see payback in 12–24 months. A single robot generally replaces 3–4 manual welders and increases throughput by 40–65%.
Yes. Our teachless programming system can import Tekla Structures, SolidWorks and UG (NX) models to extract weld positions and plate dimensions automatically.
