Question 1: What Is Your Longest Weld Seam?
The longest seam determines whether you need a fixed workstation, a rail-mounted robot or a full gantry. Short, discrete welds fit a workstation. Beams and long profiles need rails. Large panels, such as ship hull sections, need gantries.
Question 2: What Is Your Batch Size and Part Variety?
High-volume, low-mix production suits a dedicated industrial robot with fixtures and offline programming. High-mix, low-volume work favours a cobot or teachless system where new parts can be programmed quickly from CAD.
Question 3: What Is Your Floor Space and Crane Access?
If floor space is limited, a cantilever or gantry robot keeps the ground clear. If crane access is good, a floor-mounted rail system is often more economical.
Match the Robot to the Job
Match payload and reach to your heaviest part and largest joint. Add seam tracking if your fit-up tolerance is wider than ±1.5 mm. Choose the welding process based on material and quality requirements.
